I have been an avid reader of period literature and watched every movie possible about the seemingly lovely time periods past. I have found the combination of reading novels and watching the screenwriter’s take intriguing. Many of the classics are written in beautiful prose and dialogue which causes a delightful mental ballet, as if dancing through words and adjusting the mind to new word order and use.

Lorhainne Eckhart

Lorhainne Eckhart began her writing career in 2008, when she published her first novel, The
Captain’s Lady, a Contemporary Military Romance.

Lorhainne Eckhart is a member of the RWA, Sisters in Crime and Victoria RWA. She makes
her home on beautiful Vancouver Island, and lives in the country with her three children. The
mother of a special needs child. And one of her greatest gifts was having to learn, organization,
structure, and how to stay focused on what’s really important in life. She lives by simple rules,
the same she teaches her children. Stay honest, be impeccable with your word, never take
advantage of anyone, and treat everyone with respect. She’s an advocate for children with
special needs. Passionate about preserving our environment, wildlife, and protecting what natural
resources we have left, so there will be a future for our children.

Lorhainne loves her garden, nature and all animals. When she isn’t being a busy Mom, working
on, and promoting her next novel, you’ll find her horseback riding on the trails, working in the
garden, or outside enjoying nature.

Lorhainne is an avid reader and writer. She writes romantic suspense, but enjoys reading novels
from all genres. Some of her favorite authors include Suzanne Brockmann, Tess Gerritsen,
Nelson DeMille, James Patterson, Karen Robards, and Karin Slaughter.

Her latest novel, The Choice, Book One of Walk the Right Road Series, is a romantic, mystical
suspense. And explores an issue most women have fallen victim to at one time in their life. The
masterful predator who preys on vulnerable women, and clouds the invisible barrier between
right and wrong. What would you do for someone you love?

Tim Ellis

For the future – well, I’m a writer now – and in a way it’s what I’ve always been. I’m currently finishing the third book in the Parish & Richards series called The Flesh is Weak, which should be available for downloading by mid-August 2011. I then plan to finish another YA Science Fiction novel called The Timekeeper’s Apprentice, which is already half written, and I've been asked to 'please finish Quigg 3: The Skulls Beneath Eternity Wharf'. I’m playing about with a biopunk novel called Triple Helix set in an alternative Victorian London, and another dozen ideas such as one called Footprints of the Dead about an American ex-policeman who lives in a haunted town and... Well, you'll just have to read them all. I have so many ideas, which I turn into the first chapters of novels so that I don't forget them, and then put them on here. One day, I might get round to finishing them, but in the meantime you can read them.

Traci Hilton

I write novels, as I hope you can see. Otherwise I am not achieving the full marketing potential of the blog.  I have about seven on the back burner right now, my personal favorite of which is an homage to Dicken’s Pickwick Papers, set in modern days and starring women. Pinkwick’s Society for Women in Under  Appreciated Academics may not be the making of me but someday, just someday, it may find it’s niche .

Texas girl here. Accent and all. I'm a proud mom of three great kids, enjoying all that life has to offer, even though at times it gets pretty bumpy along the way. Not sure how this is going to work, but I'm game for anything. I've been writing or dreaming of writing all my life. Five years ago, I decided to take my dream seriously. Now, with the e-publishing taking off, my first book "Faithful Deceptions" was released Spring, 2011 along with the short story prequel "Shattered Souls of Innocence" following it in June! I'm working on edits for the next book and hoping to have a release date in the next few months. So exciting! God is so Good!

Jesi Lea Ryan

Now, that the writing part of my dream is well on it's way, it is time to fulfill the reading portion. Of course, I have always read, but I am now going to do something with my reading. I plan to use this diary to record the books I read and my thoughts about them. So what if no one is paying me for my witty and insightful opinions, I can still share them. Be warned though, I can and will read anything (except westerns for some reason) so readers of this diary will have to suffer through the craptastic trash novels and the literary classics with me.

The first ever story from the owner of Writers United

Darkness unknown

I head down a set of stairs from a room unknown to me. Where am I? I ask myself. Its dark and I am without a torch. Oh Lord, I’m scared. I stop on what appears to be the last step of the staircase. Again I ask myself. Where am I? I slowly step off the last step. Scared and tensed up. My limbs ache from being so tensed. I hear a noise. “Who’s there?” I call out surrounded only by darkness. I can’t see. It’s too dark. I use my hands to feel my way along a wall. Tears start to seep from my eyes. The panic has begun to set in. it’s so cold. If it were light I’d be able to see my breath. I come to what appears to be a door. I try to find the handle. Got it! I take a deep breath and push on the handle. It’s locked. I panic more. Wanting to give up, wanting to scream out for help. I can hear a clock. I head towards the ticking using my hands across the wall to guide me. I feel a breeze where I stand. I stop and feel where the breeze is coming from. It’s a window. I could climb out if I open it. It’s locked as well. “Help me!” I cry out. “Please this isn’t funny” tears filling my voice. My foot catches an object as I move away from the window. I pick the object up. It’s a brick. I go back to the window. Holding the brick tight I smash it against the window hoping it will break. No luck.
Again I hit the window.
Still nothing.
One last time I get the brick and thrust it at the window. It cracks. I’m getting somewhere.
Once more against the window. It breaks. Finally I can get out. I smash the rest of the glass out the window so I do not cut myself. There’s light outside I can see just a little. I turn around the room looks burnt out, mouldy and unclean. I turn back to the window and peer out. Not good. It’s an apartment block I’m about 20 stories high. A door in the apartment opens and ten men in white suits enter. “Thank god you’re here I’ve been trapped” they didn’t speak or look at me. “Excuse me” no answer “Am I invisible?” rage filling my voice from the ignorance of the men “will someone help me please?” I shout at them. No answer again. They talk amongst there selves. One calls out from upstairs “there’s a body up here” three men head towards the very staircase I walked down still oblivious to the fact that I am there. I follow them up the staircase. It occurred to me this must be a dream I’m going to wake up soon. I got to the top of the stairs. Blood rushes from my face. I feel helpless. I look at the body in horror. My eyes begin to fill up with tears.

 It’s me. I’m dead. It’s over.

I’ve been working as a graphic artist for more years than I can remember.  Based in Barbados, where I was born, writing has always appealed to me – whether reading someone else’s literary masterpieces, or doing my own disjointed ramblings.

Early in 2008, I finally received the right motivation to just jump right in and start writing seriously. You could say I received a very strategic kick in a very specific part of my anatomy! Not literally, of course…

Dianne Venetta

1Dianne lives in Central Florida with her husband, two children and part-time Yellow Lab—Cody boy! When not whacking away at her keyboard crafting her next novel you'll find her in the family's organic garden chasing grasshoppers and plucking hornworms all the while crafting wild analogies between kids and plants and men. Definitely men.
A girl's gotta have fun, right?
When she's not knee-deep in dirt or romance, Dianne contributes garden advice for various websites and volunteers in her kids' school garden (a crazy existence to be sure). But at the end of the day, if she can inspire someone to stop and smell the roses--or rosemary!—kiss their child and spouse good-night, be kind to a neighbor and Mother Earth, then she's done all right.

Kyle A. Lohmeier

Kyle A. Lohmeier is a four-time award-winning journalist, novice hard-surface floorcovering installer and skilled pizza-maker. A native Michigander, Lohmeier moved to Ohio in 2010, two years after being laid-off from a bankrupt newspaper conglomerate that sold off the five newspapers he paginated every week. A prolific writer, Lohmeier has written for now-defunct webzines and has freelanced for American Handgunner Magazine. He writes two not-updated-frequently-enough blogs; one covering his relocation to Ohio, called “Quittin’ the Mitten,” and another encapsulating his life philosophy, called “Mind Your Own ****.” Both can be found at Blogger.com.
A self-described “Recovering Lutheran,” Lohmeier was raised a Christian and as a young adult was confirmed as a member of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. After several crises of faith, much introspective reflection and tons of independent study, Lohmeier came to take a broader, more academic view of religion and soon discovered that he found all of the world's various faiths equally implausible, and thus now subscribes to none of them.
Today, Lohmeier is happily married to his wife, Alicia, and they live in central Ohio with two cats and a “snow” corn snake. He’s presently working toward his goals of owning and operating his own pizzeria; catching more and bigger fish; getting down to 100 strokes over 18 holes of golf; marketing and selling his first novel, Dirge and developing ideas for his next manuscript.

Morgan Marshall

Hi! Yup, that’s me up there, Morgan Marshall. Nice to meetcha!

Professionally speaking I’ve been writing my whole life, starting with a series of stapler-bound books called “Lucille and Benji” when I was about five years old. Since then I’ve been published in my hometown newspaper, various anthologies and magazines, and slowly worked my way up to being a full-fledged novelist in my own right. Now my first professional-level series,  “Guts and Glory, Freedom Fighters of Nil”, is ready to introduce to you and your children, and I am so excited!

I graduated in 2006 with honors from UI&U with a BA in Film and am now a graduate student at UI&U, earning my MA in Writing and Literature with a focus on Childrens’ Literature. I am also a proud member of the Society of Childrens’ Book Writers and Illustrators.

darrenbowkerpowis

The written word has been a calling for me since I was very young.  It’s what I do.  After all, it’s in the blood. I come from a land of myth and legend. Us Welsh are story tellers and communicators.  It’s what we do.
My current work, developed and co-written with Richard Finlan, blends science fiction with Ufology and Welsh/Celtic folklore and history.  Richard comes from the same area and background as myself.  Our books are very much inpsired by the communities we grew up in, the magnificent surrounding landscape and the rich vein of history and mythology associated with them.

I was born in 1950, near Newport in South Wales. I’m married to Josanne and have two daughters, Sinead and Kelly, and two grandsons, Iestyn and Ieuan.
Having had a varied career ranging from apprentice butcher, to chemical process technician, my most enjoyable working time was at the Pontypool Free Press, where I worked as Sports/Features editor for two years.
As well as The Kin Saga, I’ve co-written Weird Tales From Weird Wales and Waliens with friend, Darren Bowker-Powis and edited Time Is… Time Was… by the mysterious Bill Williams.

Base Spirits underwent a thorough nip-and-tuck by my hand, and then my editor Heather Sangster (http://www.strongfinish.ca/) took her virtual red pen to it. She called me mid-week, raving about what a great book it is, and that she'd barely had to touch it. Gotta say that felt good!

I was assigned my ISBNs just in time to send everything to my formatters this weekend. (http://www.52novels.com/) I should have all of my files for both e-book and print format ready to go on the last week of August. I think I found a local printer to do my paperbacks... I'll let you know how that goes

Carol Oates

Carol Oates has never been one to remain still for long. After her parents’ mad dash to the hospital through the empty city streets of Dublin, Ireland, Carol made her debut into the world in the early hours of Christmas morning. Since then her pace has not slowed down in the least.

Carol was introduced to the world of supernatural books when, as a child, her family moved to a coastal suburb on the northern border of Dublin known as Clontarf, famous as the birthplace of Bram Stoker, the prolific author responsible for breathing life into the legendary story Dracula. This stirred in Carol an early passion for reading about all things supernatural. Combine that passion with a deep interest in the history and folklore of Ireland, as well as an active and vivid imagination, and Carol Oates the author was born. Carol’s love of writing about anything not entirely “human” emerged, and the premise for her debut novel, Shades of Atlantis, was born.

Raine Thomas

The author of the exciting and original series of YA fantasy/romance novels about the Estilorian plane. She became truly passionate about writing when one of her stories took an Honorable Mention in a fourth-grade writing competition (who would have thought a story about a dancing spider would garner so much attention?). Carrying that passion with her, she earned her bachelor’s degree in English with a focus in Creative Writing from Georgia State University, then her master’s degree in Humanities from Central Michigan University.

Residing in Orlando, Florida, Raine is a hopeless romantic with a background in the fields of mental health and wedding planning…two areas that intersect far more than one would think. Her years working with children and adolescents with emotional and behavioral challenges inspired her to create young protagonists who overcome their own conflicts. When she isn’t writing or glued to e-mail or social networking sites, Raine can usually be found vacationing with her husband and daughter on one of Florida’s beautiful beaches or crossing the border to visit with her Canadian friends and relatives.

Suzanne Teddi Schultz Pick

Me at the Elephant House in Edinburgh, Scotland
Hello, everyone!  I'm Suzanne, or Missus P., as you might have guessed.  I've been writing for as long as I can remember: journals, stories, blogs, essays, poetry, research papers, more stories... I created this blog just before my marriage to the wonderful Mister P. in Sept 2010.  I've recently moved from Titusville, Florida to Newcastle-Gateshead, England in 2011.  I hope you enjoy reading about my adventures.

Terry Simpson fan page

Talking to the characters I imagine has become an intriguing experience especially when they disagree with me. - Terry Simpson.

Terry grew up on the tiny Caribbean island of Barbados. He always had a love of writing for as long as he can remember.
Somehow, he grew to love fantasy more than any other although his early days were spent reading his father's books from Louis L'amour's westerns to Don Pendleton's Executioner series.
When Terry moved to New York in 1986 to live with his mother, his love for books  developed into him reading and loving fantasy authors such as  Robert Jordan, Jim Butcher, Terry Goodkind , Brandon Sanderson, George RR Martin,  Brian Lumley, Laura K Hamilton and quite a few others.
Terry began building the world for what is now called the Aegis of the Gods series in 2001. At first, it was just a hobby because of his love for fantasy and the written word. Slowly, it became a part of his life. Finally, in 2010, Terry decided to sit down and pen the first book based in his world.
When he isn't writing, Terry enjoys movies, working out, watching sports, playing with his beautiful daughter Kai, and spending time with his wife, Marie.

The end of September, I'll be heading to Pittsburgh for the MWSA convention (Military Writers Society of America) and hopefully will be picking up an award for Project: Dragonslayers. I hope to meet lots of people and do my best to get my name out there. I got lots of great stories wanting to get out of my brain, it's just finding the time in between running the farm to get them down. But I'm sure this change in life will settle down and I'll find time.

John Taylor

Hello! I started this page on the advice and at the request of family and friends. Before I go any further I must thank you all for your encouragement and for getting me to take this step - you know who you are! I hope that anyone else who stops by finds something they like. This will become a repository for my creative stuff - writing, artwork etc. 'Lifewaves and Thoughtlines' is the title of a collection I've been working on for some time now. Hopefully it may one day see the light.

Erica Lucke Dean

"Life is too short for cheap sheets." These are words to live by.

I don't get nearly enough sleep as it is, so if I'm spending my time between the sheets, you can bet they are going to be really nice sheets!
My sleeping habits aside...I have always considered myself a writer, even during those dark days when I was only writing for myself.
These days, I find myself writing into the wee hours of the morning on a daily basis, and not just for my own enjoyment...although I must admit, I make myself laugh fairly regularly.
I have several novels ready and waiting for the right publisher to come along and snatch them up...I know they will, it's just a matter of time...and I have included the first chapters of two of those so you can get just a taste (check out the Books tab at the top of the page).  I'm fairly certain that you will be begging me for more pages, and I can't wait to make them available at your local bookstore!

THE RIOTS IN THE UK

We are sorry to announce that posts and promotions are at a stop for a few days while this turmoil in the UK is sorted out.

We at Writers United wish to give the areas affected by the riots the best of wishes. For three days now idiots have ransacked shops, cars, homes. We are fully against this madness and wish to thank the police for their efforts so far. Now some speculation has arrived of yet more attacks. We know we can't stop the riots here at Writers United but what we can do is urge all of you to stay safe stay out of the areas that have been affected. If more problems arrive please do not stop to collect belongings as your lives are far more valuable.

Help the police any way you can and lets stop this idiocy.

Tiffany King

Hi, my name is Tiffany King the author of the Paranormal/Romance YA novel “Meant to Be” and I’m practically a native Floridian. My family and I have been here for the last fourteen years and have gotten quite used to the mild winters and scorching summers. I went back to school when I turned 31 and will finish up this spring. I wrote my book “Meant to Be” two years into my degree program and put it on hold while I finished school. Of course my degree has nothing to do with writing *drat* but that doesn’t mean that I’m not going to keep writing. During this process with “Meant to Be” I discovered just how much I love to write and I have many story ideas tucked away. I’m glad you made it to my blog and hope you will follow me and “Meant to Be” as we navigate through self-publishing. Welcome Aboard.

Derek Haines

Derek Haines aka The Vandal
Who or what is Derek Haines the Vandal? Novelist, songwriter, singer, musician, author, poet, lazy soul, vandal, grandfather? Who knows? From his own description below, it seems he doesn’t really know either.
‘For some reason, I was created some years ago at the age of 42, and then just started writing books, novels, poetry, songs and anything else one can do with a pencil and piece of paper. Everything is a bit of a blur before that. A strange blueish blur in fact

Tim Dedopulos

Ghostwoods is the home of Tim Dedopulos, a British writer, editor, publisher and game designer with nearly 100 works to his name in areas ranging from vampire horror, through music and art, to games, puzzles and jokes.

Tim Dedopulos.
I’m privileged to have had a stack of books published — all sorts of stuff, both fiction and non-fiction — so I have a lively interest in how people tick, the world, the way society works, all sorts of random subjects and just about everything else, actually. It’s a professional hazard, along with independence, and an inclination for dreams, wonders and happy endings.

Shéa MacLeod

Her first novel, KISSED BY DARKNESS, a fast paced urban fantasy novel with a kick-ass heroine, is available on Smashwords and Amazon.  It’s also the first book in the SUNWALKER SAGA.  Now she’s hard at work on book two of the series while simultaneously writing two further novels (not part of the saga).  Yeah, she can multitask like that!

Between The Lines

Between the Lines is not your ordinary book club.  If you came here to read the latest James Patterson book, you are in the wrong place.  However, if you have the unparalleled desire to read and experience authors you may not have had the opportunity to read before, and then interact closely with them, you have come to the right place.

Icy Sedgwick

Icy has two e-books to her name, The First Tale and Checkmate & Other Stories, as well as stories in other anthologies. She can't actually pinpoint when she started writing, as she's been scribbling stories for as long as she can remember. From the first tales scrawled with wax crayons to longer work bashed out on her mother's old typewriter, Icy has since made the leap to weekly flash fictions, web-based serials and even a novel.

Take a look guys.

Julie Anne Lindsey

As an only child I always had plenty of time to people watch and make things up. When I didn’t think I could make a living at the latter, my love of people led me to a BA in Psychology instead. A few years and three kids later, I discovered the thrill of writing. Writing lets me harness my seemingly endless supply of energy and enthusiasm and create something of value in the wake.
I’m excited to have a place where I can journal my progress, failures and all.  Getting a manuscript published is a labor of love, a test of skill, character and fortitude. I write, and read, and edit, and fret. It’s become evident to me that this endeavor must be chronicled.  So, here it is. This is my journey, my Musings From The Slush. <– Now Musings from a Midwestern Writer. I made it out! I’m free from the slush!
Update: I have contracted with the Turquoise Morning Press! My debut novella entitled Bloom will launch their new line of Honey Creek books in February 2012! Then next summer you can read my follow up novella Love Blossoms. Thank you

Faith Mortimer

Faith Mortimer;  born in Manchester, England. Her childhood was spent on Royal Air Force camps around the Globe, kindling her lifelong enthusiasm for seeing new places and meeting new people. She attended Purbrook Grammar School in Hampshire but there was never enough time for study; life was for reading, writing, painting, amateur dramatics and sport! She left school with a handful of ‘O’ levels but a wealth of interests.

Faith's love with books began at age 4. Early favourites were those by Enid Blyton with Faith joining the Famous Five and Secret Seven on their many adventures. This love for books still remains. The mysteries and secrets of novels dance around the edges of Faith's mind often keeping her awake into the long hours of the night.
